Guinea pigs are social creatures and crave the social benefits that come
with company. Guinea pigs do best in pairs or large groups. When pet shops
say that males will seldom get along their wrong. As long as the cage is big
enough and you have two of everything then males will happily live together.
Females tend to be easy to pair up especially when their young. If you want
to keep a male and female together then the male must be neutered, this can
be done by a Cavy Savvy vet.
Some may tell you that as long as you spend a lot of time with your guinea
pigs then you don’t have to get it a friend, wrong. Human interaction will
not replace the loss of social benefits that come with living in pairs.
Another ‘no’ is keeping pigs with other animals. Pet shops often keep guinea
pigs with rabbits and it often ends up in disaster. There are a lot of
reasons as to why you shouldn’t keep them together, some are:
- They have different dietary needs
- One kick from a startled rabbit will kill a guinea
pig.
- They have different social needs
- Rabbits can carry a harmful bacterium which can be
lethal to pigs.
This same rules applies to other animals; degu’s,
rats, chinchillas etc. should never live with a guinea pig or interact with
them.
Sometimes you will find that a guinea pig will just not get along with any
other. This is an extremely rare case but if it does happen then it is best
to keep their cage along side the other guinea pigs.
