The two best kinds of cavy pellets you can get in the United States, rated by such sites as Guinea Lynx, Cavy Cages, etc, are....

Oxbow Hay Company

KM's Hay Loft

Another quality pellet available in the United States (though it has corn in it.) is Mazuri Cavy Feed

Mazuri

When picking pellets, remember to make sure of the following...

No...

  • Animal Products
  • Beet Plup
  • Corn (like Ground Corn, Corn Meal, etc)
  • Seeds, Nuts, and Oils
  • Rice Flour, Rice Bran
  • Vegetable Fiber
  • Ethoxyquin
  • Corn Syrup
  • And there are many other things to avoid.

UK members can find oxbow pellets at:
Sph pet Supplies

If oxbow is too expensive, the best UK pellets is Supa Guinea Excel. Pets at home own brand is next after Excel, Only buy the Pelleted form!

Alfalfa is best for cavies under the age of 6 months, skinny caves (Not the hairless breed of cavies, but an actual skinny pig), pregnant and nursing sows (females).

Timothy is best for cavies over 6 months, and chubby/overweight cavies.

When buying guinea pig/cavy pellets, remember to ONLY buy plain guinea pig pellets, since the ones mixed with nuts, seeds, and colored bits are fattening, high in calcium (too much calcium causes bladder & kidney stones, which are painful. Symptoms: bloody urine, squealing while urinating.), and guinea pigs can choke on the seeds.
Alfalfa based guinea pig pellets are good for cavies under six(6) months of age, pregnant sows (females), nursing sows (females), underweight cavies, and sick cavies.
Timothy based guinea pig pellets are good for cavies that are grown, healthy, or chubby.
Please do NOT use rabbit pellets!! Some rabbit pellets contain things that can poison cavies. Plus, rabbit pellets do NOT provide Vitamin C. which cavies need.
The guinea pig pellets need to contain stable Vitamin C, which lasts usually 60-90 days, so check the expiration date to know when the guinea pig pellets do not supply the Vitamin C anymore! And remember to ALWAYS get the freshest cavy pellets; make sure they are a brownish-greenish color, and that they are NOT moldy. Also, make sure that the pellets do NOT have animal fat in them, since animal fat is NOT good for cavies to eat.

Good companies for Guinea Pig Pellets:
Mazuri (only alfalfa based pellets)

Oxbow Hay (has both alfalfa & timothy based pellets)

VITAMIN C:

Each cavy needs 10-30 mg of Vitamin C every day so that the cavy does not get scurvy. Some of the many fresh foods that contain a high amount of Vitamin C are: Beet greens, Bell/Sweet Peppers-red, green, yellow (not hot or chile), Cantaloupe Melon, Cauliflower, Celery leaves, Carrot tops/leaves, Dandelion greens, Honeydew Melon, Grapefruit ( sores around lips can develop, so feed Grapefruit in moderation), Kiwi fruit, Mango, Orange (sores around lips can develop, so feed Oranges in moderation), Parsley- curly or plain( high in calcium, so feed in moderation, around 2-3 times a week), Papaya/ Paw Paw/ Tree Melon, Tangerine/Mandarin (sores around lips can develop, so feed Tangerine/Mandarin in moderation), strawberries, and lots more of different veggies & fruits. Remember to give each cavy a cup of veggies & fruits daily.
